Recognizing political influences in participatory social-ecological systems modeling

چکیده
Stakeholder participation in social-ecological systems (SES) modeling is increasingly considered a desirable way to elicit diverse sources of knowledge about SES behavior and promote inclusive decision-making SES. Understanding how participatory processes function the context long-term adaptive management may allow for better design achieve intended outcomes inclusionary knowledge, representativeness, social learning, while avoiding unintended outcomes. Long-term contexts often include political influences -- attempts shift or preserve power structures authority, efforts represent economic interests stakeholders computer models that are used shape policy making implementation. Social and political influences on agricultural systems
Agricultural systems are situated within social and political environments that have tremendous influence on how they operate. If agricultural systems are to be sustainable, it is critical to understand how they are influenced by social and political factors. An expert panel approach was used to identify and rank the importance of social and political factors on agricultural systems in the US a...
متن کاملA participatory systems approach to modeling social, economic, and ecological components of bioenergy
Availability of and access to useful energy is a crucial factor for maintaining and improving human well-being. Looming scarcities and increasing awareness of environmental, economic, and social impacts of conventional sources of non-renewable energy have focused attention on renewable energy sources, including biomass. The complex interactions of social, economic, and ecological factors among ...
متن کاملGeneralized modeling of empirical social-ecological systems
Modeling social-ecological systems is difficult due to the complexity of ecosystems and of individual and collective human behavior. Key components of the social-ecological system are often over-simplified or omitted. Generalized modeling is a dynamical systems approach that can overcome some of these challenges. It can rigorously analyze qualitative system dynamics such as regime shifts despit...
متن کاملEcological and Social Influences on Population Dynamics
I examined social and ecological influences on moose (Alces alces gigas) in Alaska, USA, with respect to hunting success, antler size, and population genetic structure. Catch per unit effort (CPUE) is frequently used to assess hunter success; thus I hypothesized that landscape characteristics and moose density would affect success. Using hunter harvest tickets returned to the Alaska Department ...
متن کاملThe role of information and values in the participatory analysis of social-ecological systems
Objectivism, supposing that information is ‘out there’ and can be accessed through appropriate research methods, is a valuable and unavoidable initial stance in field work. However, even within an objectivist paradigm, information gathered from field work can never be accepted uncritically, however rigorous the research methodology, since each step of the process from the choice of methodology ...
